Hardy Sucks
Okay, I would have thought upgrading to the new Long-Term-Support edition of Ubuntu would work fine, but Hardy kinda sucks.

They got rid of XMMS from the repository, but I eventually got that reinstalled. My dvd-burner doesn't work at all anymore. It just flashes when I put in a blank DVD. Even if that did work, I can't use K3B as all KDE programs tell me that it can't connect to something. Azureus is frozen again. I lose audio in other programs (including VLC) whenever XMMS is paused, which used to be a problem before, but that was fixed a few versions ago. Sometimes I just lose audio, even with no other audio programs loaded, and have to reboot.

I don't do a lot on that computer. It is mainly to do torrents, playing media, and burning DVD. None of those are working quite right. Firefox is the only thing that is working right and that's the one which is a beta. *shrug*

Hopefully I can revert back to Gutsy without a full reinstall.

Update: Doesn't look like it. Reinstalling.

I'm reassured to know that my experience with Hardy wasn't entirely due to my own stupidity. I'd had a good experience previously with Feisty, and was really shocked at how little "just worked" with Hardy.

Yeah, I'm not sure what is going on. I didn't even think twice about upgrading as the last few releases have been incremental improvements on the last.

If I had to guess, I think it is the long term support. It must have a bunch of requirements that take up a lot of time. The last LTS edition was two months late and this one seems like a turkey. Or maybe they are too focused on the corporate users for these releases. I think I'm gonna skip the LTS editions from now on. I'll stick to their more "gutsy" and "edgy" releases that seemed to be more desktop user oriented.

The XMMS thing apparently is because the XMMS developers refuse to switch to GTK+2. I can't really blame them, considering the dependency Hell that compiling GTK+2 software always involves for me.

Yeah, I read that. That problem wasn't too bad as they do have a binary for Hardy, but it is hidden (I think I got it from here). Most of the responses to the threads complaining about it tell us that we should have switched to Audacious years ago. They also tell us to use Brasero instead of K3B.

I dunno. I use Ubuntu because is supposed to be a good desktop Linux distro. I really don't care what library or toolkit my favourite apps use. I'd still rather use Winamp and Nero, but K3B and XMMS are acceptable replacements. Brasero and Audacious seem like a step back.

Anyway, I'm happy with Gutsy and I'm back up and running now.
